With spring underway, our thoughts tend to turn to sprucing up our home and tackling projects we’ve put off during the winter. So if you’re looking to make some improvements around the house or just give it a good, deep cleaning, check out our list of helpful spring cleaning tips. You’ll be well on your way to a lovelier home in no time!

1. Have a System

When it comes to cleaning your home, things can get overwhelming fairly quickly. With so many rooms to deal with, and so many objects within them that need cleaned (and in very different ways), it can be a struggle to know where to start, or how to stay motivated.

Your best bet is to have a plan of action in place. Here are a few possibilities:

  • Top to Bottom – If you work from the ceiling downward in a room, the dust and debris will settle as you go so you won’t have to go over the same areas multiple times. Start with a solid dusting, then move on to using cleaning products, then close out with the vacuum.
  • Room by Room – You could pair this approach with the above or do it on its own. Essentially, it allows you to tackle all the cleaning and clutter of one space and get it all done with instead of doing tasks that move you all throughout the house, with only minimal progress to show for your efforts.
  • Prioritize – You probably don’t have a lot of guests to your garage or basement, so if you’re looking to give your house a deep cleaning over a few weeks, definitely save these for last. Areas like bathrooms, bedrooms, mudrooms, and the kitchen are much more highly trafficked and visited, so give yourself some peace of mind and tackle these first.

2. Replace Consumables

While scrubbing, dusting, and vacuuming are all certainly going to be in your repertoire during spring cleaning, you don’t want to neglect taking care of replacing some key items during this time of year.

There are a lot of consumable products in your home that you don’t often think about, but which need regularly replaced to function optimally. So during spring cleaning, be sure to check on and replace:

  • Lightbulbs throughout the house
  • Smoke detector batteries
  • Filters for HVAC systems, furnaces, and AC units
  • Filters in your water pitchers

Now’s a good time to also clean up the condenser coil on your refrigerator since when it gets covered in dust and lint it can cause your unit to overheat.

3. Take Care of Seasonal Items and Areas

Much like consumables, seasonal items and areas in your home often don’t get the attention they deserve throughout the year. Some things you’ll want to give a good cleaning to include:

  • Grills
  • Patios and sunrooms
  • Doormats
  • Ceiling fans and standing fans
  • Rain gutters

Since these areas and items get minimal use compared to others, they often get less attention when it comes to cleaning, even though gunk can build up just as much. Show them some love during spring cleaning!

4. Stock Up on Cleaning Supplies

In addition to standard cleaning supplies for the kitchen, bathroom, and other areas of the home, you’ll want to pick up some handy helpers that go a long way in addressing stains, odors, and discoloration.

Some elements often utilized in various cleaning home remedies include:

  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • White, non-gel toothpaste
  • Salt
  • Corn starch

Make sure to have these items on hand and do some Googling to find all the ways they can be utilized!

5. Give Some Unconventional Methods a Try

Some of the most effective ways to clean items and areas can be ones that you would never suspect! A few worthwhile, out-of-the-box spring cleaning tips to get you started include:

  • Use coffee filters to clean TV and computer screens because their delicate texture won’t hurt your electronics
  • Spray any musty clothes down with low-shelf vodka to lift any odors, then wash them as usual
  • Put vinegar in your dishwasher and run a cycle without any dishes to give your appliance itself the cleaning it needs
  • To give your coffee maker a solid cleaning, drop some denture tabs into the auto-drip tank with some warm water, and run a cycle
